Consumer Reports – Not A Good Idea To Only Consider Best Price for Wills in Texas
A recent Consumer Reports article discusses “The trouble with DIY estate planning.” Admittedly, the advice given in this excellent article is not state specific. Read the article by clicking here.
Should You Only Consider How to Get The Best Price for Wills in Texas?
According to Consumer Reports, “Some people who pay professionals to fill out their tax returns, mow their lawns, or color their hair cannot bring themselves to pay a lawyer to prepare an estate plan for them. They do not want to spend thousands of dollars on something that they think they can do themselves with will-writing software that sells for less than $100. It’s possible to get a very basic estate plan for $1,200 to $2,000 if you shop around […]”
Price Should Be One Factor, But Not The Only Factor
At Shutt Law Firm, I create most wills, trusts and estate plans for flat-rate fees. In other words, when the client visits with me at the free consultation, the client knows exactly what she’ll pay in attorney fees. Further, as an attorney practicing only in this area of law, I can offer attorney fees that are lower than clients expect.
That being said, any attorney costs more than a DIY online will. A legal education and years of probate court experience provides more value to the client than a sub-$100 online document generator. In fact, Consumer Reports states, “Consumer Reports tested three will-writing products in 2011 with the help of a law professor specializing in estates and trusts. We concluded that all were inadequate unless a very simple plan was required, such as one that leaves everything to a spouse, with no other provisions.”
My goal as an estate planning lawyer is not to be the cheapest alternative (you could write your own will for free, if you wanted); my goal is to return the most value possible to every client.
